User perception of a new hydrophilic‐coated male urinary catheter for intermittent use

This publication presents the results from a prospective observational study conducted between 2013 and 2015, involving intermittent urinary catheter users from 19 European clinics and hospitals.

The purpose of the study was to explore how different catheter features relate to adherence to intermittent catheterization. For this reason patients’ perception of, and adherence to, the hydrophilic-coated catheter LoFric Origo (Wellspect, DENTSPLY IH AB, Sweden) were observed in a real world setting.

A total of 365 patients evaluated 8 weeks’ use of LoFric Origo. The patient group consisted of both new (57%) and experienced (43%) users, and the reasons behind the therapy varied.

Approximately 33% reported neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) and 67% non-neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD). Hand function was normal for 89% and reduced for 11%. Urethral sensation was normal in 78% and reduced or absent in 22%.
