Bowel dysfunction related to spina bifida: Keep it simple

wellspect-science-alert-bowel.jpg

In this study, 228 patients with spina bifida (SB) over the age of 18 years were prospectively investigated with regard to bowel dysfunction, between 2007 and 2016. The data for each patient was collected over the course of one week.

The patients were assessed on demographics, type of SB, neurological level, motor score, ambulatory status, pain, and renal insufficiency. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale scores were self-assessed when possible and the patients were asked about their main reason for seeking care.

A questionnaire focusing on the main anorectal symptoms and bowel management therapies was used. A physical rectal examination was performed.
