Consensus review of best practice of transanal irrigation in children.

The publication is the first consensus review of best practice of transanal irrigation (TAI) in children. The review is based on the assumption that TAI is an accepted treatment for children with organic and functional bowel disorders.

Main findings in literature review

Success rate:

    • Overall, 84% (60-100%)

    • Fecal incontinence (FI), 78% (53-97%)

    • Constipation, 78% (53.97%)

Satisfaction rates and quality of life (QoL) improvement:

      • Cazemier et al 2007, 90% (satisfaction)

      • Corbett et al 2014, 95% (QoL imp.)

      • Koppen et al 2016, 86% (parent satisfaction)

Discontinuation reasons:

    • Lack of efficacy (36%)

    • Dislike or embarrassment (17%)

    • Remission of symptoms (15%)
