wellspect-science-alert-bowel

This is a prospective study investigating the effect of transanal irrigation (TAI) in 33 patients with lower anterior resection syndrome (LARS). The patients were first taught TAI and then instructed to use TAI every other day for 6 months. After the 6-month period, the patients were given a 266 ml enema administered according to the same schedule for 3 months.

The scores used to validate bowel function were:

  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Bowel Function Instrument (MSKCC BFI)
  • LARS score

To investigate quality of life (QoL), the Short Form-36 Health Survey was used. All scores were taken at start, after 6 months, and at the end of the study.
