Probiotics for preventing urinary tract infection in people with neuropathic bladder.

Wellspect Science Alert Healthcare Professional using microscope - the use of probiotics to prevent symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) in people with neurogenic bladder

This publication describes the results of a Cochrane review and meta-analysis investigating the use of probiotics to prevent symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) in people with neurogenic bladder.

The reasons behind the meta-analysis are the following:

  • People with neurogenic bladder are at high risk of UTI, with an average of 2 episodes annually.
  • There is a high prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and UTIs are becoming more expensive and difficult to treat.
  • As antibiotic use contributes to the increasing resistance of organisms, non-antibiotic prophylaxis is needed to prevent UTIs in people with neurogenic bladder.
