Clean intermittent catheterization: Single use vs. reuse.

 wellspect-science-alert-bladder

This publication describes the results from a systematic review whose purpose was to establish whether urinary catheter reuse should be considered as the first option for people managing their bladder with intermittent catheterization.

The study acknowledges the use of intermittent catheterization as a preferred therapy to indwelling catheters for patients with chronic urinary retention. It describes the different techniques and materials available for intermittent catheterization:

  • Traditional reuse of catheters with cleaning between uses
  • Single-use catheters of either uncoated, coated (i.e. hydrophilic), or gel-covered catheters.

Important factors for the choice of techniques and materials are; risk of urinary tract infection (UTI), convenience, and cost and quality of life (QoL).
